Lost Wax Casting
Carve a silver ring using wax!
In this fun and relaxing class you will model and carve wax with simple hand tools to create your very own jewellery piece. In the first session you will design, measure and carve your wax ring. It will be cast in silver by a commercial caster before you come back to the second session.
You will then learn how to remove the sprue, emery, and hand finish to your chosen surface which could include satin, polish or oxidised. There will be time to create several wax models and play with different types of wax.
The skills you will take away from this class include:
Working out how to refine your ideas and ring design
Knowledge of how to use precision measuring tools
The ability to practise wax carving techniques
Knowledge of how to finish the surface of ring by hand to desired effect
There will be a small fee for casting and metal on top of the class cost. This will depend on the size of your piece.
This is an excellent technique to learn if you are a jewellery enthusiast, as you can set yourself up at home with a limited amount of tools - and you don't need any prior experience! It is a great entry in to jewellery making, and is a technique that you can easily make quite simple statement pieces, and progress to more intricate designs as your skills improve.
