Introduction to Laser Cut Jewellery
Learn the magic of laser cutting!
Knowing the basics of using a laser cutting machine is magical! You can use a range of materials to create so many different crafty items!
In this class, you will learn the basics of how to use and design in Adobe Illustrator, the program that enables you to create files for use with a laser machine, to create a pair of earrings, a brooch and an earring stand made of acrylic.
You will learn how to manipulate shapes and adapt each of your unique designs into workable files to create your own earrings and/or brooches. You will be familiarising yourself with a laser machine, how to prepare your files for cutting and learn what materials can be cut on the machine. There will also be some simple jewellery making shown when you assemble your creations.
Over the course of 3 weeks, you will be taking a deep dive in to Adobe Illustrator to learn the basics, plus all the tips and tricks that Nikita has worked out over all her years of using this program. Then you will be creating your own designs, with guidance from Nikita. On the third week you will be learning how to use the laser cutter and then cutting your pieces to assemble into finished earrings!
You will be learning from one of the best in the business! Nikita Margarita is the person behind the powerhouse brand Doodad and Fandango. If you are in to laser cut jewellery, you will know of Nikita. This is how Nikita describes her stellar career so far:
"I studied Jewellery and Object Design at Enmore College learning all of the metal making skills they had on offer, but found myself struggling after graduation to get work and make money from what I'd learnt. I swapped over to working in acrylics in 2013 after a residency program that encouraged artists to find ways to retail their work and have been flying high on plastic fumes ever since! I've become obsessed with the medium of laser cut acrylics for use in jewellery, decor and artworks and have had amazing experiences collaborating with fashion labels and artists to make wearable art in this medium. I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge with people who will hopefully get even more creative with these skills and technology.'
Nikita is looking forward to helping you learn how to design jewellery and become proficient when using the laser cutter. You never know, this could be the start of something big!
You will need to have a laptop with Adobe Illustrator installed and up and running on it. While MakerSpace will be providing a range of acrylic colours, you are MOST welcome to come with your own pieces of 3mm acrylic (or wood, BUT NOT MDF), if you have special colours/effects you would like to cut from. We can also give you the details of some local perspex places.
Come with a few ideas and simple sketches of jewellery designs you'd like to create. Bring a pen or pencil to sketch and take notes with.
