Description

Interested in learning the steps and techniques of knife making? Join professional metal fabricator Shane Wells for this 4-day class during which you will make a traditional Drop Point knife. You will learn to safely and correctly use many of the metalworking and woodworking tools and machines in our workshop while producing your blade and handle.

We Will Cover:

  • Safe operation of  metalworking and woodworking tools and machines in our workshop.
  • Marking out and cutting high carbon steel
  • Grinding, heat treating and sharpening your blade
  • Constructing and assembling a hardwood handle for your knife

You will come away with your own hand made knife as well as the knowledge and skill to continue making knives.

All tools, materials and safety equipment are included in the price of the class. Please wear wool or cotton clothes and sturdy closed toed shoes or boots to the class.

ABOUT THE DIY DINNER SERIES:

As part of our 'DIY Dinner' series you will also be invited to our final communal dinner on the rooftop of The Old Clare Hotel in Chippendale where your knives will ceremoniously carve some of the meat dishes served during the feast.  Your ticket price covers a banquet meal shared with everyone else who has participated in making the table, the plates, the table settings and the carving knives as part of courses held at MakerSpace & Co. You will enjoy a delicious feast served by the amazing team at Barzaari Chippendale (who also have a restaurant in our local Marrickville neighbourhood) and join in a group photo of everyone involved in the DIY Dinner series.

ABOUT THE TEACHER:

Shane Wells is a knife making enthusiast, blacksmith and self proclaimed jack of all trades. Soon to apply for membership of the Australian Knifemakers Guild he is a regular face at knife shows around Australia and the Australian Blade Symposium. Having left high school to pursue his own passions, Shane finds it hilariously ironic that he is now a well regarded teacher in his own right. He has managed workshops for the past 7 years and is a wealth of knowledge on everything from propmaking to steel fabrication to resins and fibreglassing.
