DIY Dinner: Intro to Screen printing
Screen print your own table runner and napkins
This class is focused on screen printing your very own design onto a set of table runners and napkins!
The design concept will be inspired by a Himalayan Cedar tree from Petersham which is currently being turned into a dining table which you and other participants will sit at for a rooftop dinner in September as part of MakerSpace's DIY Dinner Series. One set of your magnificently designed table runners and napkins will be utilised at the group dinner, the other you will take home with you to enjoy forever.
In this 4 hour class you will:
- look at some images and graphics of the Himalayan cedar tree —the leaves, flowers, branch structure, botanical name, bark, root system etc);
- draw your own concept for a design inspired by the Himalayan cedar tree on paper;
- hand-cut a stencil of your design (if you would prefer to use one of our pre-cut designs you are welcome);
- screen print your design onto a cotton table runner and a set of napkins.
No prior knowledge or experience in design or screen printing is necessary.
All equipment provided (cotton cloth, fabric ink, cutting boards, screens, paper etc.)
All screen printed fabric must be heat-set after the class at home before washing, or the ink will wash off. This can be done with an iron following specific instructions.
ABOUT THE DIY DINNER SERIES:
As part of our 'DIY Dinner' series you will also be invited to our final communal dinner on the rooftop of The Old Clare Hotel in Chippendale where your creations will be utilised during the feast. Your ticket price covers a banquet meal shared with everyone else who has participated in making the table, the plates, the table settings and the carving knives as part of courses held at MakerSpace & Co. You will enjoy a delicious feast served by the amazing team at Barzaari Chippendale (who also have a restaurant in our local Marrickville neighbourhood) and join in a group photo of everyone involved in the DIY Dinner series.
ABOUT THE TEACHER:
Suzy Pickles started her screen printing adventure as a fourteen year old in a course where she learned to construct her own timber frames, stretch the silk, cut stencils, block with gum acacia, create alignment, build up layers of transparency with print paste, and, ultimately, to create beautiful works of art. These skills became the basis of Suzy's screen printing practice, and are still with her decades later.
She has recently returned to a screen printing practice after many years pursuing other creative avenues, including completing a Masters of Art (Time-based Art) at CoFA, working as a graphic designer for many years, raising two boys, renovating three houses, travelling, cooking sourdough, and, appropriately, making pickles. She recently had an exhibition of her screen printed artworks at The Corner Gallery, Stanmore.
