Description

This introductory one-off seminar aims to help you turn a creative spark into a sustainable business. During the seminar we will try to answer the big questions of small business. Sure, we’ll cover GST and ABNs and [some] tax and insurance and corporate structures – sole traders, partnerships, corporations – employees and profit and loss and balance sheets. Gross profit and net profit. And why none of that matters if you don’t have any cash. Pricing and pricing strategies. Budgets. Forecasts.

But we’ll also look at the art of business. Why customers actually control your business? Why you should start a business with customers in mind, rather than your work? And what to do when you don’t. What to do when your friends tell you “your stuff is so good you should go into business”. What you want to achieve personally through your business? Markets. The nature of a good deal? What the fuck is a business model and why you need one. What is a business plan and why it doesn’t have to be pages and pages of words and numbers – and why drawings or a piece of pottery or an interpretative dance might make a better business plan? Where does money come from? And how much are you really earning? Intellectual property and how it can make you rich.

Who should attend?

Anyone considering starting a business in the maker space; or anyone who is actually starting a maker business. Whether you want that business to make you a few dollars (from a hobby/art practice) or a fist full of dollars from a fully-popped business machine. Whether your business is about supporting your lifestyle, part of your portfolio career or the foundation for grander corporate ambitions.

BYO:

Please bring your ideas, thoughts, insights and questions. And your preferred note taking medium. A laptop is good too, to run a budget template and maybe a revenue calculator.
