Description

We are thrilled to present this class in partnership with Inner West Council.

This class is the first of many in the Urban Forest series, a new program utilising urban trees from across the Inner West. The timber for this class is Himalayan Cedar (Cedrus deodara), removed from a pre school in Petersham. Led by Inner West Council’s Urban Forest Manager, the timber was milled by Richard Parsons, an urban salvage expert based in Richmond. The timber has been air drying since 2014. Inner West Council has generously donated a large quantity of timber to MakerSpace for use across our classes.

Not only will you leave the class with a beautiful coffee table, but an appreciation for the richness of timber as a material, how the Urban Forest is managed and knowledge of how best to utilise timber for your own projects. During this course, you will learn how to safely and properly use the machinery in the wood and metal shops here at MakerSpace. We will introduced and practice using the jointer, thicknesser, panel saw, metal bandsaw, MIG welders and drill press.

 We will cover:

  • Workshop orientation including OHS procedure.
  • Using the jointer, thicknesser and panel saw to dimension solid timber.
  • Selecting adhesives and strategies for laminating timber tabletops.
  • Fitting butterfly keys to stabilise timber slabs.
  • Preparing timber for traditional oil finishes.
  • Cold bending steel.
  • Basic MIG welding.
  • Steel finishing.

Course schedule:

Week 1: Machining and laminating the tabletop.

Week 2: Fitting butterfly keys to stabilise any cracks or checks in the timber.

Week 3: Sanding and finishing the top with a hand rubbed oil finish.

Week 4: Fabricating the under-frame from cold bent mild steel.

Week 5: Welding the under frame using our MIG welders.

Week 6: Detailing and finishing the under frame and attaching the top.
