Description

Are you one of the many aspiring woodworkers, furniture makers, object designers? You have loads of big ideas, a little experience (perhaps you’ve taken some of our other classes?) and you’re looking to commit to a more ambitious project? But you need the gear, space – and a little extra expertise?

Join our WoodWork Term Class.

Over 5 or 10 weeks in a small group of 4, the teacher will support you as you progress though your self-directed project/s at your own pace. You’ll learn essential woodworking skills, new techniques, get inducted (or do a refresher) on the machinery.

Less experienced students will be offered sample projects to help teach the basic skills. More advanced students can work on independent projects.

Total beginners – this is not for you. You are asked to take one or two of our intro courses first- the chopping board or coffee table are great options.

What do you get? 5 or 10 weeks, 3 hours a session, max 4 participants, and a dedicated Technician to help you:

  • Machinery inductions and/or refreshers.
  • Address skills gaps for essential woodwork skills.
  • Make a game plan for that next project.
  • Refine and resolve the design and workshop how to tackle making it.
  • Refresh your machinery and tool skills, and provide safety inductions as you need them.
  • Refine techniques and skills in making and machinery use.
  • guide you through your project from beginning to end.
  • Some materials are included, but students are expected to bring their own materials for their projects – the teacher can help with recommendations.
  • Access to the workshop between classes to keep your project moving on your own.

IS THIS FOR YOU?

  • Term Classes are intended for people who have achieved some proficiency in woodwork, but want a bit of support to realise more ambitious projects, work efficiently, hit new goals, or simply be safer in the workshop.
  • If you are looking for totally new skills and this department is new to you, please check out our CLASS page – we offer one-on-one tuition if you can’t find what you’re looking for!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Book into the next available Term Class.
  • Bring drawings, materials, consumables (glue, screws, nails, sandpaper, masking tape etc.) and anything else you need to work on your project. MakerSpace can recommend suppliers.
  • The technician will work across the group, making sure you stay on track.
  • Will you finish your project in the 10 weeks? Depends on your project and your skill level, but good things take time. It will likely take several sessions, and the Tech will be happy to scope this with you as you progress.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER:

Kim Ligers is a long term member of MakerSpace & Company who has loved refining his woodworking and design skills during his time at the space. Recent projects Kim has undertaken from the space include a giant outdoor reading pagoda for his children's school, a coffin for our MakerWakes series and prototypes for an Entrepreneurial High School program we have been running with Young Change Agents. Kim loves taking all kinds of projects through the process of idea to design through to realisation and is looking forward to working on all of your projects in this class.
